Job Purpose

Overall Purpose of Position

The First Officer is responsible to the Commander. His/her primary role is to assist the Commander
in the safe and efficient conduct of the flight. In the event of the incapacitation of the Commander,
the First Officer will assume command.

The position is accountable to the Director Flight Operations & Nominated Person Flight Operations.

Main Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Assist the Commander as requested, in all duties relating to the flight;
  • Act as second in command to lead, control and the manage all members of the crew and
    passengers; be ready, in the event of incapacitation of the Commander and during the temporary
    absence of the commander from the aircraft, to assume command and take over the
    responsibilities of the commander. For this reason, the Co-Pilot must be also familiar with duties
    and responsibilities of the Commander;
  • Support the Commander in the maintenance of a proper standard of crew discipline, conduct and
    personal appearance. Maintain a high personal standard of discipline, conduct and appearance as a
    representative of the Company;
  • Always present a good personal appearance and his uniform is worn strictly in accordance with Air
    Malta policy;
  • Carry out such duties concerning the flight, in accordance with company SOPs relating to the
    specific aircraft type and as are allocated to him by the Commander;
  • As a crewmember, must ensure that he:
    • Operates in accordance with all legal requirements including but not limited to the
      Company approved FTLs and Rest Scheme, aircraft and Company established limitations;
    • Operates with a valid license, type rating and instrument rating;
    • Operates with a valid medical certificate and to report to the CPF and Crew Scheduling if an
      Operational Multi-crew Limitation endorsement has been entered in his medical
      certificate;
    • Operates to those airports where he is qualified and authorized.
    • Other duties and responsibilities as listed in the company Operations Manual

Communications and Working Relationships:

Within the Company: Flight Operations, Flight Training Section, Captains and First Officers
Outside the Company: Relevant external entities
Reports to: Director Flight Operations & Nominated Person Flight Operations

 

Person Specifications

Education and Experience:

  • EASA Part-FCL Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) or (Airline Transport Pilot Licence) with current A320 Type Rating and current Instrument Rating.
  • Minimum 500 hours on the A320 type. Candidates having the A320 family Type Rating but less than 500 hours on A320 may also be considered.
  • Date of last flight on A320 within the past 24 months.
  • Class 1 Medical Certificate issued in accordance with EASA Part-Med
  • ICAO level 4 proficiency or better in the English Language
  • MATSEC Ordinary Level pass at level 5 or better in Maltese.

 

Candidates must be prepared to undergo a comprehensive selection process, as per the company’s
Operations Manuals, which will include but not limited to a psychological assessment, and a full medical
examination.
